Get to know: Turmeric

By: Annabel Hartles |

A member of the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family, turmeric is a tropical plant native to India and Southeastern Asia. Widely used as a culinary spice, fabric dye and in traditional medicine, turmeric powder has a warm, bitter, pepper-like and earthy flavour.

A mainstay in holistic medicine, turmeric has been hailed for its wide-ranging health benefits thanks to curcumin. Curcumin is the compound found in turmeric that is responsible for its bright yellow colouring and providing the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the pungent spice.ย

Whilst acute short-term inflammation is helpful to the body in repairing damage and fighting infection, chronic long-term inflammation has been identified as a problem linked to many diseases including type 2 diabetes, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, depression and high cholesterol.ย

Easing long-term inflammation can be supported with nutritional supplements and an anti-inflammatory diet. Whilst turmeric is a key ingredient in an anti-inflammatory diet, it is best paired with black pepper to optimise absorption in the body and reap its full benefits.ย ย
